Sound Arts Initiatives presents Interior Landscapes, the world premiere of three new works born from collaboration among visual and musical artists across eastern Canada. Join us for the screening of three new short films, as well as two live performances by XIA-3 and Vainweather.

“Save The Fish” features music by Montreal/Toronto-based duo Sawtooth (Sarah Albu, voice and Matti Pulkki, accordion) with special guest Wesley Shen, harpsichord; and set design and puppets dreamed into existence by local talent Caitlin Whelan. Dive under the sea and explore a world inhabited by recycled sea-creatures, whose voices sound suspiciously musical.

“Another Day” is composed of stunning, otherworldly 3D visuals by Montreal-based animator and illustrator Amery Sandford, in concert with an original instrumental work by St. John’s own XIA-3. Fronted by celebrated guzheng player Jing Xia, XIA-3 is a high-energy, instrumental fusion project that blends traditional Chinese influences with Western post-rock grooves.

“Reverberations” is a collaboration between aerialist Heather Rumancik and improvising quartet Vainweather (Kate Read, Tiber Reardon, Michelle LaCour, and Benton Roark). Filmed in the expansive Anglican Cathedral, the musicians surround and respond to Heather’s movements and shapes; she in turn responds to their musical language, creating new shapes in the air. The resulting conversation is entirely improvised, unique and ephemeral, existing in the space only as long as its reflections take to decay.
